Idioms with “face” – part 2

Today, we will look at two idioms:

1. To make faces (at someone)

Meaning: make (usually silly) expressions with your face such as sticking your tongue out (like in the photo below) or twisting your lips to one side. This action is usually intended to make people laugh, but it could also annoy or mock someone.

Examples: The baby laughed a lot when his mother made faces at him.

                          Making faces during an interview is not a very good idea.

                          He always makes faces in class.

2. To keep a straight face

Meaning: to look serious; to not show emotion, especially when the situation in which you find yourself is very funny and makes you want to laugh.

Examples: The boy’s excuse for coming late was so funny that the teacher had a hard time keeping a straight face.

                        People who always keep a straight face are not much fun to be with.

                        Try to keep a straight face when you are in an interview.
