The past participle

The past participle

The past participle is a form of a verb. It is very important in the use of the perfect tenses. It can also be used to form passive tenses and adjectives.

Past participle of regular verbs

It is so easy to remember and use the past participle for regular verbs because they are conjugated the same as for verbs in the simple past tense. Therefore, if you know the verb in the simple past tense, then it is the same form in the past participle.

Example:

He walks (simple present tense)

He walked (Simple past)

He has walked (Past participle)

Note: The spelling of “walked” in both the simple past and the past participle is the same.

 Past participle of irregular verbs

This is quite different from the past participle of regular verbs. The form of the irregular verb in the past participle is very different. The spelling is different from the verb in the present tense. In short, there is hardly one specific rule to learn or master these verbs. My best advice to you is to memorize them and then use them as often as possible in both speech and writing.

Example:

He begins (simple present tense)

He began (simple past)

He begun (past participle)

Note the difference in spelling of the verbs in the simple past and past participle respectively.

We will look at how and when to use the part participle in another post. Stay tuned!
